Looker (Google Cloud)

Looker is a BI platform built around a semantic modeling layer called LookML. Data engineers define business logic and metrics in LookML once, and every dashboard and report across the organization draws from that single consistent definition.

The modeling layer is Looker’s strongest feature. Teams at large companies often spend enormous effort reconciling different definitions of the same metric (revenue, active users, customer count) because different teams built their dashboards independently. Looker’s approach pushes that definition upstream, so there is one authoritative answer to every metric.

Looker is owned by Google Cloud, and it integrates well with BigQuery. Google’s acquisition has accelerated the Gemini AI integration across Looker’s product.

Choose Looker when: data governance and a single source of truth for metrics are priorities, your data warehouse is BigQuery, or you need a governed semantic layer across a large, distributed analytics organization.

Tableau

Tableau is the most widely deployed BI platform in the enterprise market. Its drag-and-drop interface for building visualizations has a large, skilled user base and an extensive library of chart types, including complex geospatial and statistical visualizations.

Tableau’s strength is visualization depth. For advanced chart types, complex dashboards, and highly customized visual analysis, Tableau’s design capabilities are broader than most BI competitors. Its Salesforce ownership has added integration depth with Salesforce CRM data.

Tableau offers both desktop and cloud (Tableau Cloud) versions. Tableau Prep handles data preparation before analysis.

Choose Tableau when: your team has experienced Tableau users, you need advanced visualization types not available in simpler tools, or your data analysis workflow includes Salesforce CRM data at the center.

Power BI

Power BI is Microsoft’s BI platform, embedded in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. It connects directly to Excel, Azure data services, SharePoint, and every other Microsoft data source. Organizations running Microsoft infrastructure often find Power BI the most practical choice because the integrations require minimal configuration and licensing is bundled with existing Microsoft agreements.

Power BI has closed the visualization gap with Tableau significantly over the past few years. For most business reporting needs, Power BI delivers comparable capability. Its DAX formula language for data modeling is powerful but has a learning curve.

Power BI Pro is available as part of Microsoft 365 or as a standalone license.

Choose Power BI when: your organization runs Microsoft 365, your data lives primarily in Azure or Excel, or the Microsoft licensing bundle makes Power BI the most cost-effective BI option for your organization.

Sigma

Sigma is a cloud-native analytics platform that presents data through a spreadsheet interface. Analysts familiar with Excel or Google Sheets can work in Sigma immediately without learning a new query language or chart builder. Under the hood, Sigma translates spreadsheet operations into SQL queries against the cloud data warehouse.

Sigma’s target user is a data team working in a cloud warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks) that wants to give business stakeholders a spreadsheet-like exploration experience without the governance and scale limitations of actual spreadsheets.

Choose Sigma when: your data team works in a cloud warehouse and wants to give business users spreadsheet-style exploration over live data, or you want to move stakeholders off local Excel exports without forcing them to learn a new BI tool.

Mode

Mode is a collaborative analytics platform built primarily for data analysts who work in SQL. It combines a SQL editor, Python and R notebooks, and visualization tools in one workspace, letting analysts write code and build charts in the same environment.

Mode’s collaboration features are strong: teams can share queries, fork analyses, and build a shared library of saved queries and reports. The platform is particularly popular with analytics engineering teams and data teams that want a collaborative notebook-plus-BI environment rather than a pure visualization tool.

Choose Mode when: your analytics team works primarily in SQL, you want a collaborative environment where analysts share and build on each other’s queries, or you need Python and R alongside SQL and charts in one workspace.
