Product analytics platforms answer the same core question: what are users actually doing inside the product? Both Amplitude and Mixpanel do this through event tracking, where teams instrument user actions and then analyze patterns in those events to understand engagement, retention, and conversion.

This comparison covers both platforms in depth, plus four alternatives that serve specific segments of the product analytics market.

Amplitude

Amplitude is the most widely used product analytics platform at the enterprise level. It handles event tracking, funnel analysis, retention cohorts, and user journey mapping through a flexible chart-building interface.

Amplitude’s depth is its primary advantage. Chart-building is more sophisticated than most competitors, and the behavioral cohort system lets analysts segment users by any combination of actions, properties, and time windows. Amplitude Experiment, its built-in A/B testing module, closes the loop between analysis and action without requiring a separate experimentation tool.

Amplitude Data (formerly Taxonomy) gives data teams a way to manage event definitions, track instrumentation quality, and govern what gets sent to the platform. That layer matters at enterprise scale where dozens of engineers are instrumenting events across multiple products.

Pricing scales with monthly tracked users and feature tier. Contact Amplitude for current enterprise rates.

Choose Amplitude when: you have a data team or dedicated analyst, your product generates significant event volume, experimentation is a core workflow, or enterprise governance and data management features matter to your organization.

Mixpanel

Mixpanel focuses on making product analytics fast to access without deep analytics expertise. Its interface is designed for product managers and growth teams who want to answer questions quickly without building complex custom charts.

Mixpanel’s event tracking, funnel analysis, and retention reports are strong and accessible. The query experience feels more self-serve than Amplitude’s, which trades some chart depth for speed and accessibility. Teams at early-stage and growth-stage companies often get more value from Mixpanel because the entire team can use it independently.

Mixpanel’s free plan covers up to 20 million events per month, which is generous for early-stage products. Paid plans scale on event volume. Pricing is transparent on Mixpanel’s site.

Choose Mixpanel when: you want analytics your whole team can run without a dedicated analyst, you’re at an early-stage or growth-stage company with simpler data needs, or cost at lower event volumes matters.

Heap

Heap takes a different approach to event collection than Amplitude or Mixpanel. Instead of requiring teams to manually tag and instrument specific events before tracking them, Heap auto-captures every click, tap, form fill, and page view by default.

The practical benefit: you can retroactively analyze user behavior from the past without having instrumented those events in advance. If you decide you want to understand what happened on a specific button before you thought to track it, Heap has the data.

The tradeoff is data volume and query complexity. Auto-capture generates a lot of raw events, and Heap’s query layer helps clean that data into meaningful funnels and segments.

Choose Heap when: retroactive analysis of uninstrumented events matters to your team, your engineering resources for manual event tagging are limited, or you want behavioral data from day one without upfront instrumentation planning.

PostHog

PostHog is an open-source product analytics platform that covers event tracking, funnels, heatmaps, session recordings, feature flags, and A/B testing in a single product. It’s self-hostable, which means teams can run it on their own infrastructure and keep all user data off third-party servers.

PostHog’s self-hosted option is the strongest argument for companies with strict data residency requirements, privacy concerns about third-party analytics vendors, or a strong preference for open-source tooling. The cloud-hosted version offers a generous free tier.

Choose PostHog when: data sovereignty and self-hosting matter, you want analytics and feature flags in one tool, or you want a free tier with serious depth for an early-stage product.

June

June is purpose-built for B2B SaaS product analytics, where the unit of analysis is often the company account rather than the individual user. Most general-purpose analytics platforms are built around individual user events; June surfaces account-level metrics: which companies are active, which are at risk of churning, which users within an account are power users.

June integrates with Segment for event collection and connects to Slack for automated alerts when accounts go quiet or hit engagement milestones. The interface is designed for product and customer success teams at B2B SaaS companies, not data analysts.

Choose June when: your product is B2B SaaS, account-level retention and health metrics matter more than individual user event flows, or your customer success team needs product usage visibility alongside your product team.

Pendo

Pendo combines product analytics with in-app guidance and user feedback in one platform. It tracks user behavior, but it also lets teams overlay in-app messages, tooltips, walkthroughs, and NPS surveys on the product experience without code changes.

The combined analytics and guidance layer is Pendo’s primary differentiator. Teams use it to understand which features are underused, then surface in-app prompts that drive adoption. Feedback tools let teams capture qualitative signal alongside quantitative usage data.

Choose Pendo when: user onboarding and feature adoption are active problems, you want to run in-app guidance alongside analytics without a separate tool, or your product team wants to close the loop between usage data and user education.
