Ranking No Longer Buys the AI Citation
AI search broke the link between rank and click. On our own Search Console, non-branded queries drew a 0.09% click rate while branded search held page one.
0.09%. AI search broke the link between rank and click. On our own Search Console, non-branded queries drew a 0.09% click rate while branded search held page one.
We ran the measurement on our own site, and the number stung.
Over the last 28 days our site showed up in Google for 1,174 different non-branded queries. It earned a 0.09% click rate on them. Almost every individual non-branded query returned a 0.00% click rate. The same month, people searching our name directly held position 5 and drove most of the clicks we did get. Branded demand converted. Non-branded demand evaporated.
That’s not a taqtics problem. That’s the new shape of search, and we pointed our own tools at ourselves to show you the receipt.
What Broke
For twenty years the deal was simple. Rank near the top of the page and you earned the click. AI search voided that deal.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode now answer the question inside the results. The user reads the summary and moves on. The ranked list still exists, but fewer people ever reach it. A firm can sit at position 4 on a non-branded query and watch the click never happen.
Pew Research measured it. When an AI summary sits at the top of the results, users click a traditional search result in 8% of visits. Without a summary, they click nearly twice as often, 15% of visits. They click a link inside the summary itself just 1% of the time. The answer ends the search before the ranked list gets a look.
We saw the same effect in our own console. High impressions. Near-zero non-branded clicks. Branded search holding steady.
The One Query Type That Survived
Read our numbers again. The clicks we earned came from people who already knew our name.
That matches what we published in our firm-sites study. When an AI answers a legal “best lawyer” question, the source it cites most is the firm’s own website, 67% of the time. Directories take 21%. Earned press takes 11%. The entity the buyer already recognizes is the one the model reaches for.
Branded search is the survivor. We made that case in full in why only branded search survives, and a month of our own Search Console data now backs it with a number.
The firms that build name recognition off search, through connected TV, broadcast, and original data that gets cited, keep their pipeline. A user types the firm name, clears the AI dialog, and lands on the site. The firms still chasing non-branded organic clicks with an outdated law firm SEO playbook are fighting for a click AI search already took off the table.
What a CMO Should Check This Week
Three reads, all runnable on your own data.
Your non-branded click rate. Open Search Console and split branded from non-branded. If your non-branded queries pull impressions but almost no clicks, AI search is intercepting your demand before it reaches you. Ours does. Most sites we check do too.
Your citation source. Run your target queries through the AI tools your buyers use. When your firm appears, is the cited source your own page or a directory? If it’s always a directory, your owned content isn’t carrying weight in the layer that now decides the answer.
Your branded demand. Count how many people search your name each month. That’s the number AI search can’t intercept. If it’s flat, your off-search brand engine is the thing to fund, not another push for organic rankings that no longer convert.
We measured our own site because the honest move is to show the gap before we sell the fix. The gap is real. We have the console to prove it.

The 0.09% figure is our own site’s non-branded click-through rate across a 28-day window, June 9 to July 7, 2026, measured in Google Search Console. The 67% citation figure is from our own study of 236 AI citations across 26 legal queries.
