Quick answer
Amazon Ads remains the largest retail media network by revenue and reach, with first-party purchase data at a scale no competitor matches. Walmart Connect (which acquired Vibe.co in June 2026 for $1.4B, adding streaming TV inventory) is the fastest-growing challenger. Instacart Ads reaches grocery shoppers at point of purchase. Kroger Precision Marketing offers the deepest CPG targeting through loyalty card data. Target Roundel is strong for brands with Target-aligned demographics.
Retail media networks let brands advertise on retailer-owned properties using that retailer’s first-party shopper data. The pitch is straightforward: instead of targeting based on demographic profiles or modeled interests, you target people who actually buy your category at that retailer.
The category has grown significantly since 2020. Amazon showed the model worked at scale. Walmart, Kroger, Instacart, and Target all launched or expanded their networks in response. Each network now offers a distinct combination of reach, data depth, and ad format access.
This comparison covers the five most-discussed retail media networks as of mid-2026.
Why Retail Media Grew Fast
Standard digital advertising targeting is getting weaker. Cookie deprecation reduced the precision of third-party audience segments. iOS privacy changes reduced mobile tracking. Retail media networks addressed both problems by going to first-party data: the retailer knows what you bought, not just what you looked at.
For CPG brands, this changes the targeting equation. A brand selling baby formula can target parents who bought infant products in the last 30 days at a specific retailer. A competitor can target that brand’s buyers specifically. The targeting precision is closer to direct mail than to standard programmatic.
The tradeoff is walled gardens. Each network’s data stays inside that network. You cannot export Walmart’s shopper insights into Amazon’s ad tools. Multi-network strategies require running campaigns on each platform separately.
Amazon Ads
Amazon Ads is the category-defining player. The platform covers Sponsored Products (ads in search results), Sponsored Brands (brand takeovers), Sponsored Display (on-site and off-site display), and Amazon DSP (programmatic reach across Amazon-owned and third-party properties including Prime Video, Twitch, and Freevee).
The scale of Amazon’s purchase data is unmatched. Amazon processes hundreds of millions of transactions monthly, covering categories from household goods to electronics to apparel. For brands sold on Amazon, the closed-loop measurement is precise: you can trace an ad impression directly to a sale without relying on modeled attribution.
Amazon DSP extends retail media targeting off Amazon properties, letting brands reach Amazon shoppers on third-party websites and streaming platforms. This is where Amazon’s retail media play moves beyond its own storefront and competes with The Trade Desk and other DSPs.
Best for: Brands sold on Amazon. CPG, electronics, and consumer products advertisers with high Amazon sales volume. Brands that want closed-loop ROAS measurement tied to actual purchases.
Walmart Connect
Walmart Connect is the second-largest US retail media network and the one growing fastest heading into 2026. Its foundational strength is Walmart’s shopper data: over 200 million weekly US shoppers across Walmart stores and Walmart.com.
The June 2026 acquisition of Vibe.co for $1.4 billion changed the Walmart Connect offering significantly. Vibe was a self-serve CTV advertising platform. Integrating Vibe gives Walmart Connect a connected TV inventory layer that allows retail media targeting to flow through streaming TV placements, not just Walmart-owned digital surfaces.
This matters because it positions Walmart Connect as a full-funnel retail media platform: awareness through CTV, consideration through search and display on Walmart.com, and conversion at the point of sale. No other retail media network made a comparable CTV acquisition.
Walmart Connect offers both self-serve and managed buying options. The self-serve interface improved substantially between 2024 and 2026.
Best for: CPG brands sold in Walmart stores, advertisers wanting reach into Walmart’s grocery and household shopper base, and brands now interested in CTV through a retail data lens given the Vibe integration.
Instacart Ads
Instacart Ads operates inside the grocery delivery context, reaching shoppers who are actively in purchase mode. When someone opens Instacart to order groceries, they are not browsing for entertainment. The ad context is inherently high-intent.
Instacart’s advertising products include Sponsored Products (appearing in search results and category pages), Shoppable Display ads, and Carousels. Instacart has also expanded into off-platform advertising using its Carrot Ads technology, letting advertisers reach Instacart’s audience on third-party publishers.
The audience is smaller than Amazon’s or Walmart’s in raw numbers but skews toward higher-income urban households, which is a valuable demographic for many CPG brands.
Best for: Grocery and household CPG brands that want to reach shoppers at the moment of purchase. Brands targeting urban, higher-income demographics. Food and beverage advertisers looking for high-intent placement.
Kroger Precision Marketing
Kroger Precision Marketing (KPM), operated through Kroger’s 84.51 data science subsidiary, offers the deepest loyalty card data in traditional US grocery. Kroger runs the Kroger, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, and Smith’s banners, among others, capturing detailed purchase history across tens of millions of loyalty program members.
KPM lets brands target based on specific purchase behavior: brand buyers, competitive buyers, lapsed buyers, and category shoppers. The loyalty card data is highly accurate because it ties to real purchase receipts, not modeled segments.
The platform covers on-site (Kroger.com and app) and off-site (programmatic reach using Kroger data on third-party publishers). Kroger has partnerships with The Trade Desk and other DSPs for programmatic execution.
Best for: CPG brands with meaningful Kroger-banner distribution. Grocery and food advertisers wanting precision targeting based on verified purchase data rather than modeled audiences.
Target Roundel
Target Roundel is Target’s retail media network. Target’s shopper base skews toward younger families, urban and suburban households, and higher-income demographics compared to Walmart. For brands aligned with that profile, Roundel’s data is well-matched.
Roundel offers on-site sponsored placements on Target.com, off-site programmatic reach using Target’s first-party data, and social media placements (including Pinterest and Instagram extensions using Target audience data).
Target’s loyalty program (Target Circle) provides the first-party purchase data that powers targeting. Roundel has expanded its off-site reach through programmatic partnerships.
Best for: Brands that sell well at Target and want to reach that specific shopper profile. Consumer products targeting families, home goods, beauty, and apparel categories where Target skews.
